Description
JACQUIN (Trophime). *Melyanthe and Cleonice*, a tragicomic tale dedicated to Her Highness the Princess of Condé. Paris, Jacques Quesnel, 1621. In-12, brown morocco, framed by a triple gilt rule, scattered with gilt fleurs-de-lis, gilt coat of arms in the centre, plain spine decorated with a scattering of gilt fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Title-frontispiece engraved by Léonard Gaultier, 12 ff., 413 pp. First edition of this romance and adventure novel dedicated to the Princess of Condé (Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency).  The author, from Provence or the Dauphiné, served in the King’s Guard regiment. The action takes place in the Dauphiné, Provence, Languedoc, Nice, Rome, Viterbo and amongst the Barbary pirates of Algeria. The edition was published jointly by Billaine and Quesnel. A fine, well-preserved copy, bound with the coat of arms of Henri II, Prince of Condé. Olivier, pl. 2622, cites this copy. As the work is dedicated to the Princess of Condé, it may be regarded as a dedicatory copy.  From the libraries of Lucien-Graux (1957, II, no. 57), with bookplate; and Charles Van Der Elst (1985, I, no. 111), with bookplate, then Cécile Éluard.
