Description
LA FAYETTE (Madame de). *Zayde*, a Spanish history by Monsieur de Segrais. With a treatise on the origin of novels by Monsieur Huet. Based on the copy printed in Paris, 1671. 3 parts in a small 8vo, red morocco, double gilt fillet binding, fleurons at the corners, gilt central motif, ribbed spine with panels featuring mosaic-style gilt decoration, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (Lortic). 168 pp., 154 pp., 1 blank folio, 164 pp.
The volume is adorned with a frontispiece engraved by R. de Hooghe. Dutch edition [Elsevier], modelled on the original Paris edition, Barbin 1670.
The novel was written in collaboration with Segrais. “It is known that Segrais contributed only to the structure of the novel, to which La Rochefoucauld, according to Mme de La Fayette, lent a little of his own spirit. Huet’s Letter was composed on the occasion of this novel.” Tchemerzine VI 351. “Although this volume is in-8, we include it, following Brunet’s example, in the Elzevirian collection, where Zayde occupies its rightful place alongside Mme de La Fayette’s two other novels, *La Princesse de Montpensier* and *La Princesse de Clèves*... ”, according to Willems.
A fine copy, in a sumptuous binding by Lortic.
