Description
[LE NOBLE (Eustache)]. *The Story of the Dragon Lady*, recounting the military exploits and adventures of Geneviève Prémoy, under the name of Chevalier Baltazar. Paris, Amable Auroy, 1703. In-12, red morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine covered with a small-iron decoration, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (Hardy). Portrait engraved by Scotin the Younger, 5 ff., 614 pp., 1 f. of privilege. A very rare first edition of this account of the adventures of Geneviève Prémoy, born in Picardy in 1660, who disguised herself as a man to join the Prince of Condé’s regiment. Although her true identity was revealed when she was wounded, she was nevertheless permitted by Louis XIV to continue her military career. According to Jones, p. 7, the work is attributed to Eustache Le Noble.  A very fine copy from the libraries of Count Octave de Béhague (1880, no. 1942) and Pierre Louÿs (1930, II, no. 444).
