[LENGLET DU FRESNOY]. On the Use of Novels, or a Demonstration of Their Usefulness and Their Various Characteristics: with a Bibliography of Novels… by C. Gordon de Percel. Amsterdam, Widow of Poilras, [Paris], 1734. 2 volumes in-12, pale calfskin, coats of arms on the covers, decorated spines, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition published under a pseudonym with a fictitious address. Barbier describes his copy, which bears this critical note: ‘The author adopts a system here that does not appear to conform to sound morality, with regard to the reading of novels. He has slipped in many extremely liberal passages. Consequently, he deemed it appropriate not to reveal his true name. This work is becoming rare and may prove useful, particularly due to the catalogue contained in the second volume.’ A copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis Hyacinthe Boyer de Crémilles, Minister of War (1700–1768).  From the library of Ch.
