Description
[MAILLY (Louis, Chevalier de)]. *Rome galante: a secret history during the reigns of Julius Caesar and Augustus*. A new edition corrected of several errors that had crept into the previous one.  Paris, Jean Guignard, 1696. 2 volumes in one in-12 volume, purple morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine with gilt decoration, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (David). Frontispiece, title page, 5 ff., 117 pp., (3 pp.) – 129 pp. (including title page), (3 pp.). Second edition; the first was published in 1695 by the same publisher. Chevalier de Mailly (1657–1724), godson of Louis XIV, is best known as the author of fairy tales and imaginary journeys. With his style characterised by preciousness and gallantry, Mailly epitomised the male author in a predominantly female world and genre. The work is dedicated to the Princess of Conty, Louis XIV’s favourite daughter, whom he had with Mademoiselle de La Vallière. From the Fleury Library (1997, no. 42), with bookplate. Lever, p. 383.
