MARCASSUS (Pierre de). *La Clorymene de Marcassus*. Paris, Pierre Billaine, 1626. A substantial in-8 volume, in pale calfskin with gilded coats of arms on the covers, spine decorated with arabesques and alternating coats of arms, marbled edges (late 17th-century binding). 14 unnumbered folios, 909 pp. A very rare first edition of this precious novel dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu. A Gascon born in Gimont in 1584 and who died in Paris in 1664, Marcassus taught at the Collège Boncourt before becoming tutor to François de Vignerot, Richelieu’s nephew. A copy bearing the coat of arms and armorial bearings of the Countess of Verrue, with the inscription ‘Meudon’ above the arms.
