Description
[MOSNY DES URSINS (Marquise de)]. *Le Roman de Mélusine*. By M. L. M. D. M. Paris: Pierre Rocolet, 1637. Small 8vo, marbled calfskin, gilt coat of arms on the covers, decorated spine, gilt edges (early 18th-century binding). 3 ff. (of 4), 498 pp., 1 f. (large stamp of Pierre Rocolet).
An extremely rare first edition of this precious novel. Brunet listed it under the entry for ‘Mélusine’, but it bears no relation to that famous chivalric romance. Lever has identified the author; according to a letter from Chapelain to Balzac, it is believed to be the Marquise de Mosny des Ursins, which is consistent with the initials in the title.
The work is dedicated to Mademoiselle Séguier.
A fine copy, bearing the coat of arms of Louis-Urbain Le Fèvre de Caumartin (1653–1720).
The privilege page is missing.
