Description
PUGET DE LA SERRE (Jean). *The Romance of the Court of Brussels, or the Adventures of the Bravest Knights Who Ever Lived and the Fairest Ladies in the World*. Printed at Spa and at Aix in Germany, by Jean Tournay, 1628. In-8, black morocco, gilt fillet binding, gilt coats of arms on the covers, spine decorated with gilt sprigs and alternating coats of arms, interior lace, gilt edges (late 18th-century binding). Frontispiece, 8 unnumbered leaves, 726 pp., 1 errata leaf.
An extremely rare first edition of this novel, in which the principal figures of the Belgian nobility of the time appear under assumed names: the Duchess of Croÿ, the Duchess of Aerschot, the Prince of Chimay… “This novel, written in a quintessential style,” says *Le Bibliophile Belge*, “is intriguing. In it, the author features the leading figures of the Belgian nobility of the time under names analogous to those in the *Dictionnaire des Précieuses*, which, however, did not yet exist.”
A complete copy featuring the superb frontispiece engraved by J. Valdor after Gérard Douffet, which is missing from almost all known copies.
Without the 2 ff. of key plates.
A copy bound with the coat of arms and armorial emblems of the Countess of Verrue.
From the libraries of Baron Warrenghein, with ex-libris; and of Count Octave de Béhague (1880, I, no. 972).
