Description
[TORCHE (Abbé Antoine)]. *Le Chien de Boulogne, ou l'amant fidelle*. A romantic short story.  Cologne, Pierre du Marteau, 1669. Small 12mo, lemon-coloured morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine with gilt decoration, gilt edges (Hardy). 179 pp. (all included). An Elzevirian edition of a novel first published in Paris by Quinet in 1668. Abbé Torche (Béziers, 1635 – Montpellier, 1675) presents here a short, vengeful autobiographical tale. ‘Rejected by a Miss Ferlingham, whom he had courted most ardently, the abbé attributed his defeat to her mother, and took his revenge by portraying her in the most odious light under the name of Linguamfer. Through a deplorable mistake, this lady’s sons, believing they were avenging their mother, cruelly beat another poor abbé with a cane, shouting at him: ‘You will remember the Dog of Boulogne!’ Bibl. Clérico-galante, p. 167. A fine copy. Lever, p. 104 – Willems 2044.
