Description
[URFÉ (Honoré d’)]. FAUCHET (Claude). Les Antiquitez gauloises et françoises. Expanded to include three further volumes: covering events in Gaul and France up to the year seven hundred and fifty-one AD. Paris, Jérémie Perier, 1599. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, brown morocco, double gilt fillet binding, fleurons at the corners, ribbed spine with gilt panels and fleurons, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (Thibaron-Echaubard). 26 unnumbered folios, 228 numbered folios – 180 numbered folios Second edition, partly original; the first appeared in 1579 in quarto format. A fine copy formerly owned by Honoré D’Urfé (1567–1625), bearing his handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title page: Ex libris Honorati D’Urfé 1604 as well as a note in his own hand at the bottom of the last page concerning Claude Faucher: This author is a most diligent researcher of antiquity, particularly regarding names and dates, but he declares himself biased against the authority of the Popes, although I do not consider him a heretic.  A notable provenance, as Claude Fauchet’s *Antiquitez* is one of the key sources for *L’Astrée*. “Almost all his historical knowledge comes from this book”, A.
