VALENTINIAN (Theodosius). The Story of the Lover Resurrected from Death by Love, in five books. Paris, Claude Micard, 1572. In-16, red morocco, gilt fillet binding, decorated spine, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (18th-century binding). 5 ff., 555 pp., 5 ff.  A rare Parisian edition of a novel originally published in Lyon in 1555 in quarto format. Théodose Valentinian is a pseudonym of Nicolas Denisot, also known as the Count of Alsinois (1515–1559), a literary figure from the Maine region. We owe this information to Véronique Duché-Gavel’s thesis, defended in 1994, *Recherches sur Théodose Valentinian ‘l’Amant ressuscité de la mort d’amour’*.  The table of contents ends at the letter E, but the collation corresponds to that of Brunet. No bibliography – including those by Brunet, Cioranescu, Haureau and Quérard (*Supercheries*) – gives the author’s real name. All list Théodose Valentinian as the author, with no further information. A fine copy in 18th-century morocco leather. Brunet V 1038.
