[BELLIN de LA LIBORLIÈRE]. *The English Night, or the Adventures—once somewhat extraordinary, but now quite simple and very commonplace—of Mr DABAUD, Merchant of Rue St Honoré in Paris*. A novel of the sort of which there are far too many. Translated from Arabic into Iroquois, from Iroquois into Samoyed, from Samoyed into Hottentot, from Hottentot into Lappish, and from Lappish into French by the Reverend Father SPECTRORUINI, an Italian monk.  To be found in the ruins of Paluzzi, Tivoli… Grasville… in the castles of Udolphe… and in all places where there are ghosts [Paris, Pougens, 1799]. 2 volumes in one in-12 volume, half-basane (contemporary binding). 206 pp. – 174 pp. An extremely rare novel. It is, from start to finish, a parodic novel, the first – and undoubtedly the best – of the parodies of the ‘roman noir’. Maurice Lévy, in *Le Roman gothique anglais*, devotes a lengthy entry to this work (pp. 491–499): To our knowledge, no other parody of the ‘Gothic’ novel possesses the same density or presents the same incredible wealth of characteristic details as *La Nuit anglaise*.
