Paris: Gide et Nicolle, 1817. 3 volumes in-12, pink Russian half-leather, smooth spines with decorative lettering, red paper covers framed by gilt garlands, coats of arms in the centre of the covers (contemporary binding). 2 ff., 247 pp. – 2 ff., 255 pp. – 2 ff., 250 pp. First edition of the translation, published in the same year as the original English edition. It tells the story of the social rise of the hero, Harry Ormond, set in Ireland and France. The novel links the destinies of these two countries, both gripped by the same revolutionary fervour. Ormond eventually falls into line by enlisting in the British army and renouncing his aspirations for independence and revolution. Binding featuring the coat of arms of Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile (1798–1870), Duchess of Berry. Quérard III, p. 9 – Olivier 2554 fer 2.
