It tells the story of the social rise of the hero, Harry Ormond, set in Ireland and France. The novel links the destinies of these two countries, both gripped by the same revolutionary fervour. Ormond eventually falls into line by enlisting in the British army and renouncing his aspirations for independence and revolution.
