Description
[ANONYMOUS]. *Le Bréviaire des amoureux, ou tableaux du tombeau d'amour*. Rouen, Jacques Besongne, 1608. Small 12mo, red morocco, gilt fillet binding, decorated spine, gilt edges (Lobstein). 4 ff., 55 pp., 2 pp. First edition. A short treatise on reflections on love, reminiscent of ‘précieux’ literature. The privilege is granted ‘to Monsieur D. of the Rouergue region’. The author dedicates his breviary: ‘To my Mistress: You have caused me my sorrow, and I call you my treasure; you sought to kill me, and I have given you my life; you have put me to death, and I have striven to make you immortal.’ The cruel woman’s name was Gabrielle; she is mentioned in the epitaph of the unfortunate lover that concludes the volume. Minor repairs to several leaves. Gay 1, 432.
