Description
[BALZAC (Jean-Louis de)]. [OGIER (François)]. A Defence of Monsieur de Balzac. Paris, Pierre Rocolet, 1628. In-8, brown calfskin, wide blind-stamped border of a fillet and garland, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (Bretault). Title page, 14 pp., 390 pp., (4 pp.), 1 blank folio, 72 pp.  Second edition published one year after the original quarto (Paris, Morlot, 1627). According to Ménage, Balzac is said to have contributed significantly to the writing of this work, the dedication to Cardinal de Richelieu of which is signed F. Ogier. François Ogier (1597–1670) was a member of the literary group known as the Illustres Bergers, a circle of young, learned poets who were admirers of Ronsard. ‘As much a literary as a political manifesto, the *Apologie* heralds a new aesthetic of eloquence that places the greatest emphasis on the arrangement of words, rhythm and harmony and which, whilst reflecting modern and worldly taste, is developed in accordance with the great ancient treatises’, according to Lucette Sigaux. On the endpaper, this note: bound by Bretault, who sold me this book on 21 May 1898.  The hinge on the front cover is split. Lucette Sigaux, Bulletin of the Association – Guillaume Bude 1981, pp. 101–102 – Tchemerzine I, p. 350, does not describe this second edition.
