In-15, green morocco, framed with a triple gilt fillet, gilt fleurons at the corners, decorated spine, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (19th-century binding). 296 pp. (including frontispiece title page), 5 ff. of half-leaves. This is the first Elzevir edition, and is held in higher regard than the one published by Louis and Dan Elsevier in Amsterdam in 1663. This edition, dedicated by the publisher to the Duke of Montlauzier, was presented after Balzac’s death by Girard, Archdeacon of Angoulême. It is adorned with a title-frontispiece by P. Philippe.
