BILLAUT (Adam). *Les Chevilles de Me Adam*, a joiner from Nevers. Paris, Toussaint Quinet, 1644. Quarto, brown calfskin, gilded coat of arms on the covers, decorated spine (contemporary binding). Engraved portrait, title page, 28 pp. (dedication to the Viscount d’Arpajon in verse), 3 ff.(preface by Marolles, Abbot of Villeloin, and privilege), 100 pp. (Approbation du Parnasse and foreword to the reader), 3 ff. (names of the authors of the Approbation du Parnasse and table of contents), 315 pp.  First edition of the first collection by the poet-carpenter Adam Billaut (Nevers, 1602–1662). Nicknamed ‘Virgil with the plane’, Billaut was one of the first working-class poets. The *Approbation du Parnasse* contains dozens of poems addressed to the carpenter-poet by other poets: Saint Amant, Colletet, Corneille, Benserade, D’Alibray, Gombaut, Rotrou and others.  This is followed by: *Stances de Maistre Adam au Parc de Nevers, sur le départ de la Serenissime Reyne de Pologne*. Paris, Toussaint Quinet, 1645. 12 pp. A very rare first edition.  Bound with a coat of arms and bearing the bookplate of Louis-César de Crémeaux, Marquis d’Entraigues, Lieutenant-General of the Mâconnais administration, who died in 1747.
