Description
CHARRON (Pierre). *De la Sagesse*. Leiden, Jean Elzevier, n.d. [1659]. Small 12mo, red Jansenist morocco, fillets on the edges, lace lining, gilt edges (Capé). 12 unnumbered folios (frontispiece, title page, dedication, preface), 581 pages incorrectly paginated as 621, (1 page) and 6 folios of tables. This undated edition, the third and rarest of the four published by this publisher, was the most prized by collectors. Tchemerzine finds it “somewhat less attractive than the others”, whilst Willems agrees that this edition is less attractive than that of 1646 but points out that it is identical, line for line, to the previous one (1656) “to such an extent that it even reproduces the pagination errors”. These errors consist of 40 missing pages between pages 264 and 295, and then from pages 366 to 377. The only distinctive feature of this edition is the dedication by Jean Elzevier in the introductory section “to the Gentlemen of the Provincial Council of Holland & Co”. Willems discusses the publication date of this edition at length, comparing the dates and positions of the dedicatees and, above all, drawing on a Blaeu catalogue which dates it to 1659; this date is now accepted as the standard. A fine copy in a luxurious binding. Willems, 843 – Rahir, 838 – Tchemerzine, III, 262 c.
