Description
[COTOLENDI (Charles)]. *Arlequiniana, or Witty Remarks, Amusing and Pleasant Stories Gathered from the Conversations of Arlequin*. Paris: Delaulne and Brunet, 1694. In-12, lemon-coloured morocco, covers and spine covered with a chequered pattern of green and red mosaic lozenges, gilt interior edging, gilt edges (19th-century binding). Wood-engraved frontispiece, 21 unnumbered folios, 271 pp., 11 pp. Rare first edition.  Saint-Evremond attributes to Charles Cotolendi this ‘miserable collection (...) often indecent and vulgar’, which brings together the jokes of Domenico Biancolelli (1636–1688). Having arrived in Paris in 1662, he was one of the stars of the Comédie Italienne, which was based at the Palais Royal, like Molière’s troupe, and performed alternately with it. This copy is adorned with a very fitting ‘Harlequin’s cloak’ design, which, curiously, is unsigned. Discreet repairs to the frontispiece and folios 169–170. Lever 972 – Aude 10.
