Description
GOMBAULD (Jean OGIER de). *L'Amaranthe*. Pastoral. Paris: François Pomeray, Anthoine de Sommaville and André Soubron, 1631. In-8, black Jansenist morocco, gilt interior edging, gilt edges (Joly). 14 ff. (including frontispiece and title page), 160 pp. A very rare first edition of this pastoral poem in verse dedicated to ‘La Reyne mère du Roy’, Marie de Médicis.  During Marie de Médicis’s regency, Gombauld—nicknamed ‘the handsome Ténébreux’—had unrestricted access to the queen, who was deeply moved by him because he resembled a man she had loved in Florence. She paid the poet a considerable pension. A Huguenot, Gombault was sincerely devoted to his faith. A fine copy. The Hague. *La France protestante* V, pp. 293–301 – Tchemerzine V, p. 438.
