Description
HARDY (Alexandre). The Chaste and Loyal Loves of Theagene and Cariclée, Adapted from the Greek version of Heliodorus’s *History* into eight dramatic poems, or consecutive plays. Paris, Jacques Quesnel, 1623. In-12, fawn calfskin, embossed with a cold-pressed fillet, decorated spine, red edges (18th-century binding). 12 unnumbered folios, 502 pp., 1 blank folio, 64 pp.  First edition. A theatrical adaptation in verse of Heliodorus’s novel by the playwright A. Hardy (c. 1570–1632), who was the ‘hired poet’ of the Comédiens du Roi, a travelling troupe led first by the actor Valleran Le Conte and later by the actor Bellerose.  From the O’Reilly libraries (Le Havre), with bookplates; and from the actor and director Jean Meyer (1914–2003), with bookplates. Cioranescu 34869 (edition dated 1628).
