Description
LE GAUFFRE (Thomas). The Life of Claude Bernard, known as ‘the Poor Priest’, written and compiled by his successor. Paris, Claude Sonnius and Denis Béchet, 1642. In-8, red morocco, double border of gilt fillets with fleurs-de-lis and a crowned monogram at the corners, coat of arms in the centre of the covers, ribbed spine covered with a design of gilt arabesques, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 8 ff., 567 pp., 6 pp. of tables.
First edition published one year after Father Bernard’s death.
Thomas Le Gauffre, born in Le Grand Lucé in the Sarthe in 1604, met Father Bernard in 1638. Following this encounter, he entered holy orders and declared himself Father Bernard’s successor. In 1646 he was appointed bishop in Canada, the ‘first bishop of New France’, an honour which he declined before dying of a stroke three days later.
