Description
LE NOBLE (Eustache). *La Grotte des fables*. Fables 1 to 4. Paris, Martin and George Jouvenel, 1696. 2 volumes in-12, brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt panels and fleurons, title page in red morocco (contemporary binding). 14 fables with separate pagination (the first 3 comprising 24 pp., the next 10 of 36 pp., the last of 34 pp. and 1 folio containing the notice and privilege) and a separate privilege, each with its own decorated title page and 14 separate copperplate illustrations.
Eustache Le Noble, Baron de Saint Georges de la Tenelière (1643–1711) ‘had acquired a fairly considerable reputation towards the end of the 17th century through his talents and the troubles his misconduct brought upon him’, according to *Biogr. Univers. XXIV, p. 94.
A disgraced gentleman, Le Noble led a life as a writer, forger, inveterate reveller and fugitive lover. Frequently imprisoned, he managed to escape from the Conciergerie.
