Description
PALLAVICINO (Ferrante). *La Taliclea*. Four books. Amsterdam, published by Franc. Ma. Boccafranca [Leiden, Sev. Mathys], 1653. In-24, red morocco, Du Seuil-style decoration, decorated raised spine, decoration on the edges, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 4 ff. (including frontispiece and decorated title page), 541 pp. A copy of the first state described by Pieters and Willems. This edition was usually attributed to the Elzeviers; Pieters maintains this attribution whilst qualifying it in a note concerning an edition of Tasso from the same press. Willems echoes Pieters’ observations and concludes that these publications must be distinguished from the Elzeviers’ output. In his entry on the Tasso volume of the same style: ‘It is customary to classify these volumes amongst the works of L. Elzevier. This view is so widely accepted that Mr Pieters felt obliged to conform to it, without prejudice, however, to his personal opinion, which he recorded in a note. (...) The Tasso, as well as the Taliclea of 1653 and the Secretaria di Apollo of 1653 (...) were produced by an obscure contract printer in Leiden (...) I am entirely in agreement with Mr Pieters, except that Severyn Mathys seems to me to deserve a little more consideration..." From the Charles van der Elst Library (1987, II, no. 61), with bookplate. A few stained leaves, short on the outer margin, slight damage to the text on the final leaves. A fine copy. Pieters p. 322 no. 25 – Willems 1676 [no. 1673 for his comments on the printer].
