PICCARDT (Henri). *Les Poésies françoises Dédiées à Madame Suzanne de Pons, Dame de La Gastevine*. Paris, Jacques Le Gras, 1663. In-16, green Jansenist morocco, gilt lace lining, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru). 18 unnumbered folios (including the frontispiece and title page), 195 pp.  ‘Who was this H. Piccardt, about whom all biographies remain silent? His publisher, in a preface, informs us that Mr Piccardtus—as he calls him—‘was born and brought up amongst a people who have always been accused of being dull, lacking in vivacity and of producing nothing of their own (...) it was only seven or eight months ago that Mr Piccardtus had the greatest difficulty in expressing himself in prose—and even then, very little of it was in French—and that since then he has composed more than three thousand lines of verse.” And indeed, all the pieces that make up this volume—stanzas, sonnets, madrigals and epigrams—are sound and elegant, and demonstrate in their author as much ease and even wit as is found in most poets of the present day. ” according to Viollet-Le-Duc, who suggests that this poet may have been a descendant of the learned archaeologist Michel Piccard of Nuremberg, who died in 1620.  We now know that Henri Piccardt (Woltersum, 1636 – Harkstede, 1712) was a Dutch lawyer, son of the pastor Gualtherus Piccardt (1602–1678), that he studied law at Groningen, then at Orléans, where he obtained his doctorate in 1660. From there he travelled to Paris, where he was introduced into court circles, into the entourage of Louis II de Bourbon Condé, and into Madame Caron’s salon.  From the libraries of Am.
