Description
PUGET DE LA SERRE (Jean). *Le Secrétaire à la mode*, or an easy method for writing, as the occasion requires, various letters of compliment, love letters and moral letters. Leiden, J. Marci, 1645. 3 parts in a small in-12 format, vellum with flaps, marbled edges (contemporary binding). 380 pp., including frontispiece and 3 title pages, 2 ff. of tables. *Le Secrétaire à la mode* is followed by *Compliments de la langue françoise* (pp. 159–266) and then by *Élégances de la langue françoise accomodées au langage du temps* (pp. 267–380).  Each part has its own title page bearing the same address and date. This style guide enjoyed considerable success; Willems records six editions published by Elzevier between 1641 and 1662. Among the numerous counterfeits, he cites this edition by Jacob Marci, dated 1643.  Rodent damage to the vellum at the bottom of the front cover. Willems, p. 246.
