SCUDÉRY (Georges de). *Alaric, or The Defeat of Rome*: A heroic poem dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen of Sweden. Based on the Paris edition, The Hague: Jacob van Ellinckhuysen, 1685. In-12, red morocco, gilt fillet binding, gilt monogram in the centre of the covers, spine decorated with gilt panels, fleurons and monograms, gilt interior lace, gilt headband, untrimmed (Bedford). Portrait of Queen Christina, engraved frontispiece, 16 unnumbered folios (dedication and preface), 340 pages, 5 folios of tables, 1 blank folio. A fine edition, one of the last in this format, decorated with 10 engraved plates. A fine copy, untrimmed, bound with a crowned monogram for Robert d’Orléans, Duke of Chartres (1840–1910), by the English bookbinder Bedford.
