BERQUIN (Arnaud). Complete Works. Paris, Henriot, 1836. 4 volumes in-8, pink calfskin, spines decorated with gilt rocaille, large embossed plaque framed by a gilt border on the covers, gilt edges, interior lace, guilloché clasps (contemporary binding). Half-title page, IV pp., II pp., 572 pp. – 2 ff., 584 pp. – 2 ff., 416 pp. – 2 ff., 412. A new edition adorned with 200 vignettes engraved and drawn by the finest artists. This is the most complete edition, adorned with charming illustrations. These are the works of Berquin (Bordeaux, 1749 – Paris, 1791), entirely devoted to the *Enfantina* series, which, in France, established children’s literature as a genre in its own right. Shortly before his death, he was proposed as tutor to the Dauphin, the future Louis XVII.  I–II: *L’Ami des Enfants*; III: *Le Livre de Famille*; *Bibliothèque de Village*; *Choix de Lectures*; IV: *Introduction à la Connaissance de la Nature*; *Lydie de Gersin*. Illustrations in volumes I and II engraved by Leloir after Lallier.  A fine copy in a luxurious Romantic binding. Minor wear to a few corners, spine slightly faded, very rare foxing and minor blemishes in the margins.
