FRAMERY (Nicolas-Étienne). Memoirs of the Marquis de S[aint] Forlaix, compiled from his family’s correspondence. Paris, Fetil, 1770. 4 tomes in 2 volumes in-12, light brown sheepskin, blind-stamped decoration, spine with 5 raised bands and gilt panels (contemporary binding). Title page, 197 pp. – 1 blank folio, title page and 187 pp. – title page, 282 pp. – title page, 224 pp., 3 folios of approval. First edition of this epistolary novel.  Nicolas Framery (1745, Rouen – Autun, 1810) was a highly regarded playwright, poet, musicologist and composer. Quoted by Michèle Bokobza Kahan in *Libertinage et folie...*, Julie d’Ornance, the novel’s heroine, offers a sociological critique of the uniformity to which the conventions of etiquette lead: “Imagine a throng where no one can be distinguished, vague and impertinent remarks, men of unbearable tedium, women of extravagant ridiculousness.
