GHERARDI (Evaristo). *Le Théâtre italien*, or the comprehensive collection of all French comedies and scenes performed by the King’s Italian Comedians… A new edition, revised with great accuracy. Paris, Briasson, 1741. 6 volumes in-12, marbled fawn calfskin, decorated spines, red edges (contemporary binding). New edition illustrated with a portrait of Gherardi, 63 engraved plates and 72 pages of engraved music. Evaristo Gherardi (Prato, 1663 – Paris, 1700) made his debut at the Théâtre Italien in 1689 in the role of Arlequin. He published his collection in Brussels in 1691 and 1697, and then in Paris in 1700, the year in which he was murdered (on 31 August) as he was returning from Versailles, where he had gone to present his Théâtre Italien. A copy from the library of the Château de Mouchy, bearing the engraved bookplate of Hélie de Noailles (1871–1932) with the motto ‘Loedimur haud aura lethali’.
