Description
[GODART d’AUCOUR (Claude)]. *La Pariséïde, ou Pâris dans les Gaules*. Paris, Pissot, 1773. 2 volumes in one in-8 volume, red morocco, framed with triple gilt fillets, plain spine decorated with gilt panels and fleurons, black title label, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 3 ff. (title folio, frontispiece, ornate title page), XX pp., 231 pp. – 3 ff. (title folio, frontispiece, ornate title page), VIII pp., 270 pp., 2 ff. (approval and privilege). First edition of this poetic prose narrative in the style of the epic translations and compositions of the period – *Telemachus*, *La Henriade*, *Jerusalem Delivered*, etc. – a trend that saw the emergence of the first stirrings of a national novel. The hero of *The Iliad*, wishing to redeem himself after his lack of courage during the Trojan War and seeking to forget Helen, travels to Gaul where, with the help of his son Parisis, he founds a Celtic empire—an empire whose name is still borne by the ‘New Troy’.  Two intaglio frontispieces by Pierre and Lempereur. A fine copy. Quérard III, p. 389.
