HUET (Pierre-Daniel). Carmina. Fifth Edition. Paris, J. Estienne, 1709. In-12, fawn calfskin, gilt coat of arms, decorated spine, blue edges (contemporary binding). Fifth edition of the Neo-Latin poems by Pierre-Daniel Huet, Bishop of Avranches and founder of the Caen Academy of Sciences. Born in Caen in 1630 and regarded as one of the most learned men in France, Huet was a friend of the great men of letters of his time: Naudé, Pétau, Vossius, Ménage, Ch. Perrault, Pélisson and Conrart. A fine copy of the author’s work, bound with his coat of arms and bearing his bookplate. He bequeathed his library to the Jesuits of Paris. From the library of the Jesuits of Paris, with a handwritten bookplate on the title page. A label pasted in the lower margin reads: *Ne extra hanc Bibliothecam efferatur. Ex obedientia*, an instruction that proved short-lived. The volume left the Society to join the library of Baron Du Charmel, whose bookplate it bears.
