[MICHEL (of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte)]. *The Triumph of Love, or the Serpent Hidden Among the Flowers*. London and Paris, Duchesne, 1755. 2 volumes in-12, red morocco, edged with a gilt fillet, gilt coats of arms on the covers, decorated spines, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 255 pp. (in total) – 168 pp. First edition. The first volume is a prose adaptation of a Neo-Latin poem in 12 cantos, according to the preface. The second volume, intended as a sequel to *The Triumph of Love*, is not by Monsieur Michel but by Marescot. It is entitled *La brochure à la mode ornée de quelques pensées*. “The bookseller Duchesne sought to sell this pamphlet alongside *Le Triomphe de l’Amour* by Monsieur Michel, as though one were the second part of the other. Neither author was satisfied with this arrangement, which did not please the buyers any more than it did them.” See Fréron’s *Année littéraire*, 1756, vol. 2, p. 201. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Beatrix de Choiseul-Stainville, Duchess of Gramont. Born in Lunéville in 1730, she was guillotined in 1794.
