Description
POPE (Alexander). Complete Works, translated into French. New edition, revised, corrected and expanded to include the English text alongside the finest pieces, and illustrated with fine engravings. Paris, Veuve Duchesne, 1779. 8 volumes in-8, beige granite calfskin, wide border of garlands and gilded chains, decorated spines, interior lace, gilt edges (Early 19th-century binding). Edition published by the Abbé de Laporte. Portrait and 17 separate-block illustrations by Marillier. ‘The edition most highly regarded is that of 1779. It is not only more accurate than the previous ones, but also contains more material. The publisher has placed at the beginning of most of Pope’s works a historical summary explaining the project and introducing the key figures involved. Some passages have been newly translated for this edition, and the Life of Pope has been considerably expanded on the basis of private memoirs, and in particular that compiled by Mr Ruffead’, according to Quérard. A copy in elegant, unsigned bindings dating from around 1800–1810. A few foxing spots. Quérard VII, p. 278 – Cohen 817.
