Description
SAINT LOUIS (Pierre de). *La Madelaine au Désert de la Sainte Baume en Provence*. A spiritual and Christian poem. Lyon, Jean-Baptiste and Nicolas de Ville, 1700. In-12, marbled fawn calfskin, edged with a gilt fillet, gilt coat of arms on the covers, spine decorated with fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 12 ff., 214 pp.  A new edition of *La Magdaleïde* by Father Pierre de Saint-Louis, a great Baroque poem, exquisite gibberish, a burlesque mystical epic. The author’s secular name was Pierre Barthélemy. Born in 1626 in Vaureas, at the age of 18 he fell in love with a young lady named Magdelaine, to whom he sent thousands of amorous verses, in French and Provençal. Smallpox claimed his beloved’s life in 1651. Louis Barthélemy joined the Carmelite Order and composed this poem in her memory; it was first published in 1668. Théophile Gautier devoted a lengthy article to the author of *La Madelaine* in *Les Grotesques*.  A copy bearing the coat of arms of Elisabeth-Charlotte of Bavaria, known as the Palatine Princess (1652–1722), second wife of Philippe d’Orléans, brother of Louis XIV. Cracked hinges. Olivier pl. 2564, plate 5.
