In-12, fawn sheepskin, gilt fillet binding, plain decorated spine, red title label, yellow edges (contemporary binding). 256 pp. (the first XIV in Roman type). First edition of Antoine-Jean-Noël Lallemant’s translation of *Thoughts on the Education of Daughters*, published in 1787, the first book by the feminist schoolmistress and mother of Mary Shelley. 5 frenetic-style plates which foreshadow the illustrations in her daughter’s books.  The author sets out her views on the education of girls in the form of a children’s book. “This work (...) pays tribute to the heart and mind of the celebrated woman who is its author. It perfectly fulfils its purpose, which is to lead to virtue through benevolence directed towards all living creatures in creation, from insects to humankind (...) interspersed with tales or stories that lend this reading the keenest interest...”  Dentu.
