Description
KEEPSAKES – PARIS–LONDON. French Keepsake 1837–1838–1839–1840–41. Unpublished short stories... Paris, Delloye, 1837–1841, 4 volumes, large 8vo, green half-maroquin, gilt fillets on the edges, plain spines decorated with gilt arabesques (contemporary binding). First edition of these four keepsakes, each adorned with 26 separate illustrations engraved on steel in London by the finest artists. The publishers’ note states: ‘The two words “Paris-London” explain their entire concept; they sought to combine a selection of English vignettes—which have raised the reputation of London’s engravers so high—with previously unpublished short stories by distinguished Parisian writers, thereby bringing them together to enhance one another, in addition to their respective and indisputable merits, French literature and English engraving’.”  The short stories appearing here in their first edition are by: Alfred de Vigny, Chateaubriand, Alphonse Karr, Lassailly, E. Fouinet, Jules Janin, R. de Beauvoir, H. Berthoud, Paul de Kock, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Mérimée and many others. Fresh copies, with text and plates free from foxing—which is rare—in beautiful, uniform Romantic bindings, in volumes 1 to 4. Lachèvre. Bibliography of Keepsakes, Volume I, pp. 101–106.
