Description
[MISSAL]. ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT, calligraphic and illuminated, 164 folios on vellum (1854–1873).  Square 12mo, brown morocco, with a Gothic-style cold-stamped design on the covers, cipher at the corners, silver clasps (Gruel). A remarkable illuminated manuscript, in the style of 15th-century books of hours. The text is calligraphically rendered with initials in blue and red. The wide margins are adorned with coloured and gold decorations featuring motifs of fruit, flowers, twigs and birds, all of which are unique.  A folio at the beginning states: ‘This Missal, begun at the Prefecture of Haute-Loire in 1854 by Madame de Chèvremont, was continued and completed at La Rive Saint-Servan (Ille-et-Vilaine) in 1873 by Mademoiselle Gabrielle Chèvremont, her daughter.’  Leaves 83–84 bear two coats of arms. Following the manuscript (pp. 167–174) is a note on the de Chèvremont family dated 25 August 1873. Alexandre Chèvremont, former prefect of Saint-Malo, Épernay, Saint-Quentin and Reims, who had been retired since 1859 following an injury sustained during a riot, had married Estelle Henry in 1849. The couple had three daughters, including Gabrielle, born in 1852. The manuscript was begun by the mother and completed by the daughter.
