Description
[MISSAL]. ROMAN PARISH. Limoges, Barbou, 1885. 12mo, bronze morocco, front cover set with a finely chased silver plate, decorated ribbed spine, gilt edge and interior lace, lined and with silk endpapers bearing a cipher and inscription in gold lettering. Preserved in a black Russian leather box, edged with a gilt border, lined with white silk (contemporary binding). Missal richly illustrated with black-and-white borders and plates.
A copy presented to a couple, with the following inscribed in gold letters on the silk endpaper: Marie de Clock, Paul Roger – 19 May 1887; 1 May 1890 – 22 April 1903, and the monogram CR.
This copy is adorned with a finely chiselled plate: two bands of fillets and floral motifs; in the corners, a book, the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Spirit; the central subject is a liturgical scene against a background dotted with points and flowers, set within an architectural frame which is itself surrounded by rocaille and floral motifs. Superb goldsmith’s work.
