[MISSALS]. A collection of 8 devotional works in fine bindings. 1) MISSAL of Our Lady of the Rosary. Paris, Sanchez, printed by Quantin, 1887. In-12, brown morocco with a chiselled silver plate on the front cover, spine with five raised bands, interior lace edging, lined and endpapers in greige silk tabis, fillets on the edges and gilt guilloché on the caps (Bouasse Lebel and Massin). The plate bears the initials M. N. L.; a note in pencil on an endpaper reads ‘Marie Neveu-Lemaire (1890–1988), wife of René de Planhol (1889–1940)’. 2) ROMAN MISSAL containing the services for Sundays and major feast days... Tours, Mame, 1889. In-12, red morocco leather, framed by a gilt fillet, wide gilt garland with plant motifs on the lower and outer edges of the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons, interior lace, silk lining and endpaper, fillets on the edges, gilt guilloché on the cap edges, gilt edges. 3) FLAVINGY (Countess of). A collection of prayers, meditations and readings... Tours, Mame, 1874. 12mo, full fawn calfskin, framed with five gilt fillets, ribbed spine with gilt compartments, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 4) MATHIEU (Charles). Ornaments from manuscripts of the 8th to the 16th centuries reproduced in colour... Paris, Morel, undated (circa 1870). 12mo, brown morocco, a chiselled silver cross inlaid on the covers, lined with a turquoise ‘Khi’, ribbed spine, gilt interior lace, cap-style clasps and metal corners, lined with blue silk, gilt edges, chiselled clasps (contemporary binding). The ‘Khi’ on the second cover is missing. A book presented to a mother by her daughter’s godfather (inscribed on an endpaper). 5) MISSAL of the Holy Eucharist illustrated by J. and L. Beuzon. Turnhout, Brepols. In-12, red morocco leather with a border of gilt fillets and a cold-stamped garland of flowers, and a rich decoration of gilt arabesques; lace lining; gilt edges. A beautiful missal, richly illustrated in black, produced by the Dierckx Zoon printing house. 6) WEDDING BOOK. Paris, Curmer, (c. 1842). 12mo, cream velvet, gilt lettering on the covers, gilt fleurons and medallion on the spine, gilt clasp, headband and pendants in metal-thread passementerie, gilt edges. A charming wedding book presented to Antoinette and Gustave de Clamecy (Nièvre) on their wedding day in September 1842 (handwritten note), followed by a handwritten family register recording the births, first communions, etc. of the children born of this marriage. 7) LIGUORI (Alphonse de). Visits to the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin... Tournay, Desclée, Lefebure et Cie, 1880. 16mo, brown shagreen, framed with gilt fillets and a broad gilt garland, gilt ‘ex-dono’ in the centre of the front cover, decorated ribbed spine, inner lace, gilt fillets on the edges and headband, lined and endpapers in red silk with a gilt ‘ex-dono’ and date, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Text framed by red ruling lines, fine black-and-white illustrations within the text. The first name ‘Mélanie’ is embossed in gold letters on the cover and the lining, along with the date 12 May 1887. A handwritten note on the endpaper states: ‘Presented by the Duke and Duchess of Padua to Mélanie de Verneaux, 12 May 1887’. 8) PRAYERS OF THE HOLY MASS in the form of a Meditation on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Paris, Claude Herissant, 1751. In-16, brown silk binding covered with silver-thread embroidery; in the centre of the covers, two painted medallions (contemporary binding). A very rare volume missing from all the collections consulted. The text is lavishly illustrated with fine folk-style woodcuts depicting the parts of the Mass. An interesting handcrafted binding in embroidered silk featuring two folk-style paintings. The silk is worn at the edges, and some of the embroidered ornamentation on the spine appears to be missing.
