[MISSALS]. GRUEL BINDINGS. A collection of four devotional works published and bound by Gruel. 1) NEW HOURS and Prayers composed in the style of manuscripts from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Paris, Gruel and Engelmann, 1903. Square 12mo, the volume entirely mounted on tabs in a red morocco binding, with chiselled silver clasps, a ribbed spine, gilt fillets and guilloché patterns on the edges, gilt interior lace, lined and endpapers in red silk tabis, gilt edges. Preserved in a brown Russian leather box, with cold-stamped fillets and a white silk lining (Gruel). A superb missal illustrated with miniatures and marginal decorations, printed in colour and enhanced with gold, inspired by the finest manuscripts. Damage to pp. 46–47; otherwise in excellent condition; the box’s closing mechanism is faulty. 2) ROMAN PARISHAL based on 15th-century French printed editions. Paris, Gruel and Engelmann, printed by Jouaust. Full blue morocco, covers illustrated with gilt fleurons at the corners and a large design of ribbons intertwined with gilt fillets, bearing fleurons and long gilt Latin inscriptions; chiselled silver clasps; spine with raised bands and blind-stamped panels; gilded interior edging, endpapers of lighter blue moiré adorned with a gilded fleur-de-lis, gilded fillets on the headbands and caps, gilded edges (Gruel).  Rich borders, illustrations within the text and 8 plates, 4 of which are in colour. Texts by A. Driou, drawings by Auguste Ledoux. Fine condition. 3) MASSILLON (Jean-Baptiste). *Le Petit Carême*. Paris, Gruel and Engelmann; Lille, Desclée and de Brouwer. In-12, blue morocco, framed by a cold-stamped border and a double border with interlacing, in the centre of the covers, a composition formed of three bands of cold-stamped floral scrollwork, shells and sheaves; ribbed spine with cold-embossed bands and panels; gilt title; gilt initial at the bottom of the spine; gilt interior lace; gilt bands on the edges; untrimmed; gilt head; preserved in a black cloth slipcase. (Gruel). A fine edition bound in red, illustrated with a portrait and beautiful headpieces and initials. A card of Bristol board mounted on an endpaper: ‘Madame Paul Boivin-Champeaux’. The initials ‘E. L.’ stamped in gold letters at the bottom of the spine. 4) BOSSUET (Jacques Bénigne). Meditations on the Eucharist followed by Reflections on Prayer. Paris, Jouaust, Gruel and Engelmann, 1878. In-12, brown morocco, framed by four blind-embossed fillets with fleurons at the corners, a blind-embossed design of griffins and other mythical creatures within fillet frames, spine with raised bands decorated with embossed panels, gilt title, gilt initial at the bottom of the spine, gilt interior lace, lined with brown silk endpapers, gilt edges, preserved in a black cloth slipcase (Gruel). A binding similar to the previous one, with the same initials ‘E. L.’ at the bottom of the spine. This one contains a card from Mrs Fernand Claveau on an endpaper.
