Description
RICHEPIN (Jean). The Early Years of Cesare Borgia. Paris, Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains, 1890. In-8, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, gilt fillets, spine with raised bands in a mosaic of blue and green maroquin, richly decorated, gilt head, untrimmed (see Champs). 2 ff., 83 pp., 2 ff.   A very fine volume illustrated with 13 watercolours by Georges Rochegrosse (including the title page), etched by Paul Avril, F. Courboin, Fornet and Manesse, a facsimile of a letter and a black-and-white set of the 13 illustrations.  A unique edition of 186 numbered copies on laid paper (no. 13) for members of the Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains; this is the society’s first publication.  A fine copy, into which have been inserted three portraits of G. Rochegrosse by R. Kastor (etching), Ch. Barbant (on China paper) and Lalauze (etching with Mariani coca wine) and a colour lithograph portrait of Richepin by Maillart for the *Revue Illustrée*. Included in the volume is an autograph letter from Richepin addressed to an editor of the *Revue Illustrée* concerning translations of Gogol’s poems. Vicaire, VI, 1127 – Carteret, IV, 341.
