SENANCOUR (Virginie de). *Pauline de Sombreuse*. Paris, A la Librairie Rue des Quatre fils [Ch. Malo], 1821. 4 volumes, small 8vo, red long-grain half-maroquin, red grained paper covers, crowned gilt initials on the covers, gilt fillets on the spines, untrimmed (contemporary binding). VIII pp., 303 pp. – 311 pp. – 336 pp. – 416 pp. First edition.  Mademoiselle de Senancour was the daughter of Étienne-Pierre de Senancour, the author of *Obermann*. Born in Fribourg in 1791, she made her literary debut in 1814 with articles published in the *Mercure de France*. "In this novel, a certain Count de Marsame, full of capricious energy or a sort of endearing eccentricity, is reminiscent – and sometimes to his credit, though without imitating him – of the English Lovelace. In this same novel, Hélène is to the main character what Claire is to Julie in *La Nouvelle Héloïse*; and whilst Pauline falls short of Julie, Hélène is far more interesting than Madame d’Orbe.” Quérard IX, p. 51. A copy belonging to Marie-Louise of Austria, Empress of the French from 1810 to 1814, later Duchess of Parma, bearing her crowned cipher on the covers.
