SURVILLE (Clotilde de). Poems by Marguerite-Éléonore Clotilde de Vallon-Chalys, formerly Madame de Surville, a 15th-century French poet, published by Ch. VANDERBOURG. Paris, Heinrichs and Renouard; printed by P. Didot the Elder, Year XII–1804. In-12, purple morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine decorated with gilt arabesques, gilt interior edging, gilt edges (Koehler). CII pp., 257 pp. (1 p.).  Second edition. The first edition was published in 1803 by the same publisher. The frontispiece is missing. Enclosed: Unpublished Poems by Marguerite-Éléonore Clotilde... published by Messrs de Roujoux and Ch. Nodier. Paris, Nepveu, 1827. In-8, blue calfskin, broad border of gilt fillets and garland, coat of arms on the cover, plain spine decorated with gilt arabesques and lilies, gilt edges (contemporary binding). 3 folios, XVII pages, 327 pages. First edition illustrated with 4 plates by Colin and 4 headpieces. Copy bearing the coat of arms of Marc-Antoine de Reiset (Colmar, 1775 – Rouen, 1836). A famous literary hoax which ‘for the longest period, caused the most ink to flow and aroused the strongest passions: the controversy surrounding his name and his works indeed lasted for nearly eighty years. ’ J.
