Description
GYLLIUS [Pierre GILLES, known as]. *De Bosporo Thracio*, Book III. Leiden, Elzevier, 1632. In-24, vellum, handwritten title on the spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). 380 pp., 2 ff. of tables. Frontispiece titleplate engraved by Duysend depicting a view of the Bosphorus and Europa riding Zeus.  First Elzevirian edition of this description of the Bosphorus by the traveller, humanist and naturalist Pierre Gilles (Albi, 1490 – Rome, 1555). A copy of the first of the two editions published on this date, less accurate but more attractive than the second, according to Willems, who notes that “The *De Bosphoro Tracio* is particularly valuable in that it represents a work by Denis of Byzantium, now lost, the Ἀνάπλους Βοσπόρου, of which it is an abridged translation.” Willems 366.
