BACULARD D'ARNAUD (François-Thomas-Marie). Works. Paris, Laporte, 1803. 12 volumes, 8vo, root-stained sheepskin, smooth, decorated spines. A collected edition comprising: *Épreuves du Sentiment* (5 vols.) – *Nouvelles historiques* (3 vols.) – *Les Époux malheureux* (2 vols.) – *Théâtre* (2 vols.).  ‘Baculard d’Arnaud (1718–1805) created a genre, “Sensiblerie”, which enjoyed incredible popularity at a time when wit and philosophy alone dominated literature ’ (Monselet), who adds: ‘Dramas and novels are written in this maudlin, desolate style, which thrives on exclamation marks, “alas” and sighs, and whose tear-stained dampness seeps through even the sturdiest bindings. I have never come across, even in the best-stocked libraries, a copy that is completely dry…’.  80 intaglio engravings, including 47 separate plates (22 coloured) and 33 headpieces. These illustrations, most of which are unsigned, are copies of the plates by Eisen, Marillier and Le Barbier for the 18th-century editions. This edition does not include the series of short stories entitled *Les Délassements de l’homme sensible*. The copy is free from the water stains mentioned by Monselet.
