Description
DUVAL (Alexandre). Complete Works. Paris, J. N. Barba, 1822. 9 volumes in-8, veal leather with natural grain, framed with a gilt fillet and garland, smooth, decorated spines, title page and volume number in black morocco, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Frontispiece portrait in Volume I by Boilly after Tardieu. The plays included span the years 1793 to 1821, with an author’s note for each.  Duval was a prolific playwright who survived successive regimes despite some run-ins with the censors during the Restoration. Alongside Picard, he was one of the leading figures of the theatre under the Directory, the Consulate and the Empire, across all genres. His widely performed plays were tailored to the tastes of the time, ranging from his ‘Thermidorian’ play *Les Suspects* (1796), through ‘noir’ theatre such as *Montoni* or *Le Château d’Udolphe* (1797), to the ‘troubadour’ genre: *Le Prince Troubadour* (1815), as well as numerous historical plays. He was director of the Odéon and a member of the Académie Française. A fine copy, with one hinge partially split.
