Charles LEFEVRE (1805–1882) Resting by a Stream Original oil on canvas 115 x 158 cm Signed and dated lower right: Ch... Lefevre 1844 Bears the inscription ‘2715’ in blue chalk on the stretcher Provenance: Private Italian collection Charles Lefebvre enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1821 on the recommendation of Abel de Pujol. From 1827 onwards, he exhibited portraits and historical subjects at the Salon, which brought him a degree of success, as evidenced by the numerous acquisitions by the State for museums and public buildings. He is known for his prolific output of religious works, mainly resulting from official commissions for churches in Paris and the provinces, and for his landscapes painted during his numerous travels throughout France and Italy, depicting views of the Orléans region, Saumur and the Rouen area, as well as views of Belgium. The work on display may be a view of the Dauphiné region. An artist with a wide-ranging repertoire, his works are held in several museums, notably in Bourges and Perpignan.
