Description
MEISSEN, circa 1750–1760;
A pair of salt cellars
in porcelain, decorated in a blue monochrome style known as ‘à l’oignon’, in the Rococo style. The oval-shaped salt cellars rest on a base comprising four busts of young girls and four feet with
volute relief. This is a rare form of salt cellar within this service. Marked
H. 9 cm
(Minor historical restoration to the rim, chipping, firing defects).
The ‘onion’ service was created around 1731 in Meissen and is inspired by Chinese designs featuring peaches or pomegranates.
