CHINA, East India Company, 18th century A nautilus-shaped ewer resting on a pedestal and a tripod-shaped shell-form basin in porcelain with so-called Imari decoration in blue, red and gold, featuring Bérain-style garland motifs emphasising the forms and their fluting. Height of the ewer: 30 cm Diameter of the basin: 37 cm Flaws beneath the coiled nautilus and at the back of the basin; restorations Water jugs and basins of this shape were first commissioned by private merchants in China during the Yongzheng period (1723–1735). This type of basin was frequently used in mid-18th-century Portuguese domestic silverware.
